New Contruction

New construction of paving project requires site preparation. Site preparation includes the excavation of unsuitable soils, a drainage plan to prevent ponding of water on the new parking lot, and the installation of base material such as gravel or recycled hard pac. Once these operations have been completed the paving may begin. With new construction the thickness of the asphalt has to be decided upon. The thickness generally ranges from 2 ½” to 4” thick laid in two courses. If it is a driveway with no heavy traffic, 2 ½” is adequate. If it is a truck terminal with heavy traffic 4” would be more suitable.

Repairing of existing parking lots

Repairing a parking lot can range from minor work to major repairs. If a defect is confined to a small area, that area can be cut out and replaced. If the defect is widespread throughout the parking lot other techniques may be required such as reclaiming or milling.

Reclaiming

Reclaiming is a process where a machine pulverizes the existing pavement to a point where it turns the asphalt back into base material. This reclaimed base material can be used right in place. In most cases it will also increases the overall strength of the parking lot.

Milling

Milling is process that can make the repaving of a parking lot or road more economical. This process removes the top 1”-2” of the surface which allows a new course of asphalt to be placed on top.

Resurfacing

Resurfacing is a cost effective way to extend the life of a parking lot. It is a process where after some preparation work, sweeping and tack coating is completed a 1 ½” – 2” course of asphalt is spread over and existing parking lot.
